Why is the AXIS parameter not available anymore in the AISC 360 Unified code ?
Depending on whether the angle is equal or unequal, type of LTB restraint ( totally unrestrained , totally restrained, or restrained at point of maximum moment ) or presence/absence of axial compression in the member, the AISC 360 code provides guidelines on whether the angle section can be designed using geometric axis or not.
For AISC 360-10 ( CODE AISC UNIFIED 2010 ), the software checks by itself as to whether for that particular section type/boundary conditions, the code allows checking as per geometric axis or not and if the conditions are satisfied, it checks as per geometric axis in addition to checking as per principal axis. This process is automatic and hence an AXIS parameter is not relevant anymore.
The same is true for the AISC 360-05 code too. Although the parameter is physically present in the list of design parameters, one does not need to explicitly specify it anymore.
