Overview

Have you ever wanted to customize STAAD.Pro and its functions to meet your specific needs? The new OpenSTAAD is a library of exposed functions allowing engineers access to STAAD.Pro’s internal functions and routines. OpenSTAAD’s open architecture provides customers with an Application Program Interface (API) to STAAD.Pro’s analysis and design engines as well as its Graphic User Interface (GUI) for personal customization. With OpenSTAAD, any user can use practically any programming language (including C, C++, VB, VBA, FORTRAN, Java and Delphi) to tap into STAAD’s database and seamlessly link input and output data to third-party applications. You can also automate repetitive tasks or commands in STAAD.Pro by creating your own customized macros with a full built-in VBA editor.

Following an open architecture paradigm, OpenSTAAD was built using ATL COM and COM+ standards as specified by Microsoft, Inc. This allows OpenSTAAD to be used in any environment whether it is in a customized application written in C++ or in a macro application like Excel, AutoCAD or Visio. OpenSTAAD can also be used to link STAAD data to Web-based applications using ActiveX, HTML and ASP. OpenSTAAD enables you to integrate STAAD with legacy applications and datamine and export STAAD’s results in any manner.

OpenSTAAD allows engineers and other users to link in-house or third-party applications with STAAD.Pro. For example, a user might create a spreadsheet in Microsoft Excel to analyze and design a circular base plate using support reactions from STAAD. With OpenSTAAD, a simple macro can be written in Excel to retrieve the appropriate STAAD data and automatically link the results. If the STAAD file changes, so will the Excel sheet! OpenSTAAD is currently being designed to work on the new .NET platform as well as on PocketPCs running Windows CE.

With OpenSTAAD 2.0 and later, users can also write their own VBA-based macros within STAAD and have access to functions controlling the geometry, viewing, and results display. For example, you can create macros to insert your own connection design routine which can run using the output from a STAAD run and automatically add it to the STAAD output.

The OpenSTAAD library of functions is classified under the following general categories:

  • STAAD File Input and Output (I/O)
  • Structure Geometry
  • Member Specifications
  • Properties
  • Loads
  • Viewing
  • Toolbars/Dialog Boxes
  • Output Grids
  • Output Results
    • Nodes
    • Beams
    • Plates
    • Solids

If you have STAAD.Pro 2003 or higher, you already have OpenSTAAD 2.0 or higher and don't need to download the following. If you have STAAD.Pro 2002 build 1003 or higher, you will have an older version of OpenSTAAD that does not have access to the STAAD.Pro graphical commands or does not have a VBA editor. You must have STAAD.Pro 2003 or higher to download OpenSTAAD 2.0 or above.

Instructions and examples of OpenSTAAD using Excel, Word, MathCAD and AutoCAD can be found in the Examples section of the OpenSTAAD Reference Manual

Note:  For optimum performance, OpenSTAAD should be run in STAAD.Pro 2006 or higher. It may be possible to run at least some of OpenSTAAD’s functions in earlier releases of STAAD.Pro or STAAD-III, but the results may be unpredictable, since OpenSTAAD did not exist, and therefore compatibility with OpenSTAAD was not considered during the development of these earlier STAAD versions. Research Engineers cannot provide any technical support for OpenSTAAD running in STAAD versions prior to STAAD.Pro 2006.

Current Revision posted to RAM | STAAD Wiki by Carlos Aguera on 5/20/2019 8:16:03 AM

What is new in the December 2018 releases of the STAAD software?

STAAD.Pro CONNECT Edition V22 now incorporates S-Cube design and detailing technology directly into the main STAAD.Pro or STAAD.Pro Advanced interface and licensing. This includes:

STAAD Advanced Concrete Design

  • A comprehensive set of features for the detailed structural design and drawing production of reinforced concrete beams, columns, walls, and footings
  • Includes US (ACI metric), European (Eurocode), British (BS), and Indian (IS) design standards
  • Previously a separate license, product, and installation
  • Now included with the STAAD.Pro Advanced license, or with Structural Enterprise
  • Now integrated into the main STAAD.Pro interface as the Advanced Concrete Designworkflow

STAAD Planwin

  • A specialized modeler for STAAD.Pro for concrete building floors. This is the Building Planner workflow in the STAAD.Pro interface and enables users to easily model floor-based structures.
  • Previously a separate license, product, and installation
  • Now included with the STAAD.Pro (basic) license, available only for SELECT or ELS subscribers
  • Now integrated into the main STAAD.Pro interface as the Building Planner workflow
  • Also available with a STAAD.Pro Advanced or Structural Enterprise license

Steel Autodrafter

  • Steel Autodrafter converts a STAAD.Pro model into high quality structural steel drawings, including plans, elevations, and arbitrarily located section drawings
  • A new feature included with the STAAD.Pro (basic) license, available only for SELECT or ELS subscribers
  • Integrated into the main STAAD.Pro interface as the Steel Autodrafter workflow
  • Also available with a STAAD.Pro Advanced or Structural Enterprise license

Structural Enterprise now includes RCDC FE. This product specializes in the design, detailing, drawing and documentation of reinforced concrete slabs, foundations, rafts, and pile caps, working off the results of a STAAD.Pro or SAFE model.

What happens to the STAAD Advanced Concrete Design and PlanWin licenses that I used to own through Bentley?

Although users will retain access to the functionality, STAAD Advanced Concrete Design licenses no longer exist. Each seat of STAAD Advanced Concrete Design an account owned was used to upgrade a license of STAAD.Pro to STAAD.Pro Advanced, at no upgrade charge. Any STAAD Advanced Concrete Design licenses that could not be used to upgrade a STAAD.Pro license were replaced with RCDC licenses (for example, if an account owned more STAAD Advanced Concrete Design licenses then STAAD.Pro licenses). RCDC is a standalone version of the software. RCDC is what the product was originally called by S-Cube.

Similarly, PlanWin licenses no longer exist. The PlanWin functionality is now covered by a STAAD.Pro, STAAD.Pro Advanced, or Structural Enterprise license.

How has my license portfolio changed as a result of these license changes?

Seats of STAAD Advanced Concrete no longer appear on your contract and you will no longer be charged SELECT for these. Instead, these licenses were ‘merged’ with STAAD.Pro basic licenses and replaced with STAAD.Pro Advanced (which contains Advanced Concrete Design natively). STAAD Planwin licenses were also removed from your contract as this feature is now contained natively in STAAD.Pro. Any RCDC or RCDC-FE licenses that you owned through a contract with S-Cube have been migrated to your Bentley contract.

Where do I download updates to RCDC, RCDC FE, PlanWin, and Steel Autodrafter?

All Bentley Structural Analysis software is available for download on the Bentley Software Downloads site:

https://select.bentley.com/FulfillmentCenter/en

Steel Autodrafter and PlanWin are included directly in the STAAD.Pro download and installation. RCDC can also be installed with the STAAD.Pro installer, at the user’s option. Alternatively, for users not utilizing STAAD.Pro, RCDC can be downloaded and installed standalone from the Software Downloads site. RCDC FE is also a standalone installation.

Are the new versions of RCDC and RCDC FE still compatible with CSI software (ETABS and SAFE)?

Yes.

How do I purchase licenses of RCDC and RCDC FE?

Please contact your Bentley sales representative for information on purchasing.

There is a new type of license shown in STAAD.Pro called Structural SELECT Entitlements. What is this?

Structural SELECT Entitlements are simply features in STAAD that are available only to accounts on Bentley's SELECT or ELS programs. This concept was first introduced in STAAD.Pro CONNECT Edition V22. The Steel Autodrafter and Building Planner workflows in STAAD.Pro are presently the only two SELECT Entitlements in STAAD. There is no way to turn these features on if you are not on SELECT or ELS. This was shown in the license dialog as a quick means of verifying access.

  1. How does Staad "direct" a spring to determine if it is in compression or tension?
  2. What is the difference between a LOAD COMBINATION and a REPEAT LOAD?
  3. In a structure which has wall panels in addition to other things, is it possible to temporarily disable some of the outer panels and analyse just the rest of the structure consisting of interior beams, columns, and slabs?
  4. What's the difference between ELASTIC MAT and PLATE MAT for spring support generation?
  5. The output from my STAAD run contains the warning message :THIS STRUCTURE IS DISJOINTED
  6. Warning message in output file: This structure is disjointed, accompanied by several instability warnings
  7. I am using STAAD.Pro 2002. When the STAAD Analysis and Design engine is running, you can't minimize the box that shows the activities in progress - it is always on top. I like to start the "run analysis" then go on to work on something else while it is running. It is not very convenient having the box on top of everything. How can i fix that?
  8. My STAAD output file contains the warning message : **WARNING** THE POISSON'S RATIO HAS NOT BEEN SPECIFIED FOR ONE OR MORE MEMBERS
  9. Read/write Error in Unit No. 17
  10. I need to analyze a frame whose members have been rotated about the local z axis. Is there anyway to model this situation using STAAD? Can you input a point and define the orientation of the local axis of that point? Or is there some other way to model this situation?
  11. Is IX the St. Venant's Torsional Constant or is it the Polar Moment of Inertia?
  12. How does one get a report indicating whether the applied loads are in equilibrium with the support reactions?
  13. How can I check whether the story drift of the floors are within allowable limits?
  14. I have a structure with supports marked as elastic foundation. I am getting an error message "Error 0550" when I run the analysis. What could be the cause of this?
  15. I want to use the Master/slave command to model a rigid diaphragm in STAAD.Pro 2001. The problem is two columns separated by 40 ft. One column goes from joints 1 to 2 and the second column goes from joints 3 to 4. I wish to have a rigid link between joint 2 and joint 4. The program gives an error of multiple structures. What additional connections do I have to do to tie these joints together?
  16. I am going to incorporate into my model, rock anchors which will be installed down the center of the pipe piles. In case you are not familiar with these, they are a thread rod attached to the top of the pile, go down the center and are anchored into the rock and are used to take the uplift forces in the pier. I was planning on using the post tensioning command. Is this correct?
  17. When I try to analyse a model which contains the ELASTIC MAT command for generation of soil spring supports, I encounter an error message : Error 0550* support joints are collinear
  18. Do you have any thumb rule/ formula for estimating the time required for solving a structure involving plates elements?
  19. I have to analyse a structure for temperature load. The temperature difference is 600 deg C. (from 0 deg C to 600 deg C). Which value of alpha I shall use, (i.e. alpha for 0 deg or alpha for 600 deg) for the analysis? Can I use an alpha value for the mean temperature?
  20. Can I carryout a machine foundation analysis using STAAD PRO (Embedded Block foundation and Pile foundation)?
  21. UNEXPECTED COMMAND IN LOAD DATA CHECK SPELLING AND ORDER OF DATA IN CASE NO. 1
  22. What is the procedure used by STAAD.Pro in computing the stiffness matrix of a tapered beam?
  23. While using the "Master Slave" command to define a rigid diaphragm in a framed multi-storeyed structure, what criteria should one adopt to determine the "Master node"?
  24. I am analyzing a simply supported beam, which is 20 feet long. There is a concentrated force acting at the mid-span point of the beam. In one case, I model it as a single member and apply the load at midspan using the member load option. In another case, I model it as 2 separate members, each 10 ft long, and apply the load at the central node using the JOINT LOAD option. The member cross section is a W12X26 from the American steel table. When I look at the deflection at the 10 ft point, using the PRINT SECTION DISPLACEMENT command for case (a) and the PRINT JOINT DISPLACEMENT command for case (b), the values do not match. Why?
  25. Can I design a stringer using STAAD.Pro?
  26. In the member end forces output, why are two values being reported for axial forces? Also, why is it that sometimes the numerical values of these two are the same and sometimes they are not?
  27. When I try running the analysis on STAAD.pro 2001, I get the error message error message as "Fatal Error: Cannot start analysis Engine". However, when tried with another machine with Win 95/98. The same software is working fine without giving any error.
  28. I have a continuous beam, and all members have the same E and same properties. I run it once with one set of member properties. I double the depth of the members and run it a second time. The results of the second run (midspan moment, reactions, etc.) do not match those from the first run. Shouldn't the results stay the same as the EI remains constant for both the beams?
  29. During the analysis of a large model, the analysis engine stops with the error message Read/write ERROR in Unit No. 17
  30. I want to ignore the stiffness of certain members during analysis but want the loads applied on them to be transferred to the structure. Can I use the INACTIVE MEMBER command for this ?
  31. How to add/change/modify sections to the Section Database?
  32. ERROR-STAAD BUILT IN MEMORY BLOCK HAS OVERFLOWED
  33. When I save my file in STAAD.Pro, all REPEAT commands are changed by STAAD to the expanded format. The same thing happens when I do a File > Save As. I would like to retain my input using the REPEAT commands. Is there any way to do that ?
  34. What is a Reference Load Case?
  35. Can we specify time-history loads in a Reference Load Case?
  36. Some of the STAAD.Pro icons are missing from the toolbar region. How can I get those back ?
  37. In the output file, I see the following Note. **NOTE- Tension/Compression converged after  5 iterations, Case= 3 . What does it mean?
  38. After installing Staad .Pro, the following error comes  : " The application has failed to start because xmllite.dll not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem. “
  39. Analyze multiple STAAD.Pro models in a batch processing
  40. Perform clean installation of STAAD.Pro Connect Edition
  41. Exceptions.UnexpectedException error message

My company has custom steel section databases and these are mdb files. How can I get these sections into the STAAD.Pro CONNECT edition ?

The section databases in earlier versions of STAAD.Pro were MSAccess databases (mdb files) whereas in STAAD.Pro CONNECT Edition, these have been changed to SQLite databases (db3 files).

Any older mdb file that you may have, can be easily converted to the db3 format following the procedure outlined below

Click on Section Database from within the Specification ribbon menu as shown below

From within Section Database Manager, choose the options marked below and click on the Convert button ( the existing database file is assumed to be aiscsections_ml_SLS )

A command prompt window will show up as seen below showing a message that data has been successfully exported

Click on the "X" to close the command prompt window and note that a "Database converted successfully" message is also displayed at the bottom of dialog box

Click on the "X" to close out of the dialog box and close out of Section Database Manager and out of STAAD.Pro

Now manually copy the aiscsections_ml_SLS.db3 file into the following folder

“C:\Users\<user profile name>\AppData\Local\Bentley\Engineering\STAAD.Pro CONNECT Edition\Default\Sections”

Re-launch STAAD.Pro and you should now be able to access the section database

If you run into issues with accessing your database after following the procedure above, please refer to thiswiki

Revision 5 posted to RAM | STAAD Wiki by Sye on 5/20/2019 10:06:29 PM
 Product:STAAD.pro
First Affected Version:21.00.02.30
 Found in Version:21.00.02.30
Fixed and Released in Version:21.03.00.146
 Area: Custom Steel Section Database
 Issue #:870111

Problem Description

Older custom steel section databases created by users do not show up within the Section Database for the STAAD.Pro Connect Edition.

Details on how to convert older section database files (mdb) to the newer format (.db3) can be found here

.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Copy the older section database file (let’s say “aiscsections_ml_SLS.db3”) into the Sections folder of the installation [C:\ProgramData\Bentley\Engineering\STAAD.Pro CONNECT Edition\Sections]
  2. Go to Specification > Section Database and the new database does not show up

Workaround

  1. Go to the user profile folder “C:\Users\<user profile name>\AppData\Local\Bentley\Engineering\STAAD.Pro CONNECT Edition\Default\Sections”
  2. Open the “Custom.ini” using Notepad or Worpad
  3. Search for ‘[CustomDBFlags]’
  4. Under the above section, Set ‘1’ against ‘AISCSections’
  5. Next, search for ‘[CustomDBNames]’
  6. Under this section, Set ‘aiscsections_ml_SLS’ against ‘AISCSections’
  7.
  8. Now, copy the ‘aiscsections_ml_SLS.db3’ database to ‘C:\ProgramData\Bentley\Engineering\STAAD.Pro CONNECT Edition\Sections’
  9. There are a couple of more copies of the “Custom.ini” file within the following folders.
  10. C:\Program Files\Bentley\Engineering\STAAD.Pro CONNECT Edition\STAAD\Sections
  11. C:\ProgramData\Bentley\Engineering\STAAD.Pro CONNECT Edition\Sections
  12. In case you do not see the same entries updated in those files, please go ahead and manually change the data as suggested in steps 3 to 6 in these files too.
  13. StaadPro should now pick up sections from the above user database.

Note : You may not be able to launch the Section Database Manager from within the Specification ribbon menu after you make the change. However the user sections should be accessible

Solution

The problem has been addressed in the STAAD.Pro Connect Edition version 21.03.00.146.

Revision 6 posted to RAM | STAAD Wiki by Wentao Zhang on 5/29/2019 9:47:09 PM

Release Date: 30th May 2019

Full Version Number: 10.00.00.10

New Features in Microstran CONNECT Edition

In addition to minor error corrections and enhancements, Microstran CONNECT Edition introduces the new features discussed below.

CONNECT Licensing

Microstran now uses Benltey's CONNECT License system, Bentley's new process for product activation and usage tracking, improving our licensing capabilities with features such as:

  • License alert notifications when you are approaching a custom usage threshold
  • Replacing site activation keys with user validation, enhancing security around your Bentley licenses and subscriptions

With traditional SELECT Licensing, product activation has been through an activation key that an Organization distributed to all users. With CONNECT Licensing, product activation is managed by user sign in through the CONNECTION Client, which is installed on each machine that uses Bentley applications. This offers a more secure and manageable system as it offers usage alerts, notifying your users when they are about to reach a certain usage limit set by the Administrator.

Detailed information is available at Bentley Communities Licensing and Activation Wiki: https://communities.bentley.com/products/licensing/w/licensing__wiki/37813/connect-licensing for detailed information.

Free Design Codes and Features

In previous versions (prior to Micostran CONNECT Edition) the below design codes and features required additional purchase. With Microstran CONNECT Edition these codes and features are now freely available to all tiers of Microstran.

  • AISC ASD 9th
  • AS 1250/AS3990

Use of Microstran is activated by the use of one or more licenses that are managed by a license server.

The current licensing system is known as CONNECT Licensing which has been introduced in Microstran CONNECT Edition V10. This system has been introduced to provide system administrators a mechanism to better manage their usage and reduce the chances of license over use.

Click here to see more details of CONNECT Licensing.

Older versions of Microstran including V9.2, were managed with SELECT Server Licensing
