(02.2013)02.26.2013) Bentley - Concrete Documentation eSeminar Attendee Questions

This eSeminar was originally presented on Feb. 2013.

The recording will be available soon at our BeConnected site.

The following are the product-related questions and corresponding answers from the eSeminar.

  1. Q: Can layer names, text formatting in element ID's, details, schedules, etc. be setup to a specific office/client standard formatting?

A:  Both AECOsim and ProStructures have an exhaustive set of customization features.

  2. Q: Is AECOsim standalone?

A:  Yes,it is standalone and does not require a MicroStation installation.

  3. Q: What happens when you need to update the model, would the drawings automatically update?

A:  The drawings automatically become out of date, and can be updated with one button.

  4. Q: You have shown how model information is brought into AECOsim. Can you show how plan notes are added (both within the plan and standard general notes)?

A:  Text, notes, and special callouts can be added using a host of annotation commands available in AECOsim. They are the same tools available in Microstation, and in some cases have additional building-specific intelligence built into them.

  5. Q: Is AECOsim intended to replace Microstation, in terms of drawing creation for typical building projects?

A:  AECOsim is tailored specifically to buildings, and utilizes core Microstation technology. In this sense AECOsim is a more direct and optimized solution for buildings than Microstation. But there are certainly no plans for a forced transition if you are comfortable producing deliverables in Microstation.

  6. Q: How well does AECOsim work with the ProjectWise platform? I currently have a project that uses Microstation and ProjectWise. Engineers and architects in different offices share the drawings. Would AECOsim be set up in a similar fashion?

A:  Yes, AECOsim is very well integrated with ProjectWise.

  7. Q: Will be more integration between these products and Bentley Rebar in reinforcement process?

A:  Yes. Bentley is currently working on combining the 3D power of ProConcrete (ProStructures) with the 2D power of Bentley Rebar.

  8. Q: Can the system produce shop drawings and bar schedule?

A:  Yes, this can be done in ProStructures.

  9. Q: Are you going to be able to export to any type of *.rvt files?

A:  Any Bentley file format discussed today can be turned into REVIT format by use of the ISM-REVIT link. Each of the formats can be written to an ISM model and then read into REVIT.

  10. Q: Will we ever be able to export beam schedules from concept w/ tendon profiles?

A:  This is a common industry request and something Bentley is currently scoping.

  11. Q: Can we do managed workspaces with AECOsim and PW?

A:  The same mechanisms for creating and managing workspaces in MicroStation are used with AECOsim and ProStructures.

  12. Q: Is there a similar process that exists for sending data back and forth from Concept to REVIT?

A:  Yes, RAM Concept can interoperate with REVIT via ISM.

  13. Q: Does Bentley have software to automatically produce bar schedules for rebar fabrication?

A:  Yes, this can be done in ProStructures.

  14. Q: Is there a similar process that exists for sending data back and forth from Concept to REVIT?

A:  Yes, RAM Concept can interoperate with REVIT via ISM.

  15. Q: Are precast and cast-in-place projects supported?

A:  In ProConcrete (ProStructures) there is support for cast-in-place construction.

  16. Q: Are "non regular" or complex objects supported, i.g. for hydro power projects?

A:  ProStructures has support for complex objects.

  17. Q: What control do you have over the rebar notation in ABD? For example can you change the rebar callout format or can you change how the end hooks appear?

A:  Users have a lot of flexibility as there is an exhaustive set of customization tools. You can create your own end hook symbols and reformat the format the rebar callout in accordance with your firm’s standards.

  18. Q: Which products display rebar in a 3D model?

A:  ProStructures, RAM Structural System, RAM Concept, and the ISM viewer all display reinforcing in three dimensions.

  19. Q: Could you please tell me more about the new Bentley Institute Press STAAD book?

A:  Bentley’s first structural analysis and design book puts theoretical concepts for a structural design into practice with STAAD.Pro. It is a technical reference guide relating code and design requirements to the world’s leading structural analysis and design software. You can learn more about it or order one here

  20. Q: How do we learn more about this year’s Be Inspired Award winner and finalists in the Structural Engineering category?

A:  Bentley is proud to have received a number of great use cases for this new category. The Structural Engineering finalists and winner were outstanding uses of Bentley products for their offshore projects. Consider entering your innovative project in next year’s competition, which will be announced in May 2013 and awarded in October 2013 in London!

  21. Q: How do we get the continuing education credits? How can I get a certificate of attendance of CEU's?

A:  Bentley Learning Units (BLU), Bentley Institute’s equivalent to Professional Development Hours (PDH), are granted for the live and recorded eSeminar. Within 2-4 weeks of watching the presentation, Learning Units are added to your transcript. To access your transcript, go to www.bentley.com/mylearninghistory. On the "My Learning History" page, there is a detailed how-to guide related to Learning Units and transcripts, in addition to the link to the user’s online transcript. In most states, users can submit their Bentley transcripts for consideration for continuing education credit toward their registration renewals.

  22. Q: How do I view this eSeminar again or share it with a colleague?

A:  This event along with the live Q&A were recorded and it will be available online at our BeConnected site.
